About me

Retro years

Back in my day

I grew up in the retro era when we only had 3 tv channels with no remote and it ran on 10p coins for so long. Music was played on a vinyl disc and tape cassettes, Radio stations where limited. My bike was called a chopper and I whore flare pants with massive pockets, Pe kit in one pocket and pack lunch in the other. My 10p mix of sweets in my back pocket. A 10p mix consisted of Black jacks, fruit salads, swizzles, 1p bubble gum, space ships which was made from a rice paper and sherbet filling, chocolate mouse, candy cigarette's, liquorice laces, & chocolate frog.

Playing out until the street lights came on, Getting punished in school with either the cane or the ruler on your hand , fingers or bottom, Or soap in the mouth if we spoke bad. Playing out all day on a skate board or in the country side was the norm. Eating jam butties & a drink of orange squash for lunch. Helping an older person home with their bags. Standing up on the bus so an older person, woman, girl could have your seat. Standing to attention when a police officer gave you a warning. Having a bath once a week, Eating meat on a Sunday, Thinking I was posh when we had Cheese on our beans on toast. Visiting your nan in the holidays was your holiday. Being grounded playing board games was a punishment.

Work experience

Work experience

Working for the Crown most of my working life after leaving school. Being a soldier for 5 years taught me discipline, structor, motivation & survival. Then Joining a postal service for over 30 years taught me how to treat people with dignity & respect. I learnt a lot about diversity, and culture. I am very grateful for the work I did for the two companies I was with. I have met some wonderful people along the way. My only wish was that I left 10 years earlier than I did to become a gardener. I have had some great little hobbies that I really enjoyed which I feel all pointed to the direction of being a gardener. I am still learning everyday even though I have a Diploma level 3 in Organic gardening and soon to start my 6th Year. Reading books, magazines, watching tv, Instagram & YouTube is great to learn about the gardening world. However the best working experience is hands on and talking to the customers, Learning from RHS, books, shops  and garden centres and don't be afraid to talk to other great gardeners in your area picking up new ideas & skills.
